Executive Director’s Message: August 2024

August 28, 2024

Happy August,

At Commerce, our mission of Strengthening Trust in Utah’s Commercial Activities is defined by our dedication to serving Utah with excellence.

Enhancing customer service is at the heart of what we do. That is why we’re working with every division to improve the user experience. You may have already noticed some web updates, including how you log into your account through UtahId. We aim to provide a simpler, streamlined customer experience to better serve Utah.

We are also putting our efforts into encouraging innovation, protecting the public from harm, and actively observing and learning within the field of artificial intelligence (AI). We want to keep our regulations as relevant as possible, and our work in AI is a perfect example of this. As AI redefines our world, we want to responsibly tap into its potential to innovate and safeguard the public. This is why our Office of Artificial Intelligence Policy was established to help foster an environment where informed legislation and commonsense regulation can be developed. We aim to remain at the forefront of this field by actively engaging with emerging trends in AI.

Our collective efforts in this field are already being recognized. The Women Tech Council recently spotlighted Commerce’s work through their 2024 Women Tech Awards, of which I am a finalist. This nomination reflects Commerce’s dedication to shaping Utah’s tech landscape through good public policy, particularly in artificial intelligence, social media regulation, and blockchain technology. It acknowledges the implementation of the first-in-the-nation DAO Act, which recognizes Decentralized Autonomous Organizations as legal entities with limited liability protection, the Utah Consumer Privacy Act, the Utah Minor Protection in Social Media Act, and the creation of the Office of Artificial Intelligence Policy. I want to thank our legislative partners, Rep. Brady Brammer, Sen. Kirk Cullimore, Sen. Michael McKell, Rep. Jefferson Moss, and Rep. Jordan Teuscher, for their dedication and hard work on these policies. Their efforts have positioned Utah at the forefront of tech legislation. While promoting innovation, we remain committed to protecting the public and advocating for regulations that support commerce while safeguarding individuals’ rights and privacy.

Finally, we are committed to protecting Utahns in all communities, so we created Señor Protector, the newest Spanish-speaking member of our Scamalot Knights. We launched Señor Protector ads on social media about crypto, business opportunity scams, Ponzi schemes, and affinity fraud. We aim to broaden our outreach to Spanish-speaking communities, empowering them to identify fraud and defend against it.

I’m incredibly proud of our excellent work at Commerce. We will continue to make Commerce the best it can be for Utahns.

Warm Regards,

Margaret Busse
