Call for Reviewers.

Healthcare Expertise in the AI Sandbox Program

The Utah Office of Artificial Intelligence Policy (OAIP) is establishing a roster of qualified healthcare professionals to support the review of proposals submitted to the Office’s Regulatory Relief Program (the “AI Sandbox”). This effort advances OAIP’s statutory mission to facilitate responsible artificial intelligence innovation within Utah’s regulated industries. Clinical and public-health expertise is central to the Office’s evaluation of proposed AI applications in healthcare settings.

Eligibility and Areas of Need

The Office invites participation from healthcare practitioners with clinical experience, public-health experience, or both. All healthcare professions are eligible, including physicians (MD/DO), nurse practitioners, physiotherapists, and pharmacists. Participation is open to qualified professionals regardless of the jurisdiction in which they are licensed; licensure in the State of Utah is not required.

Scope of Engagement

Service as a reviewer is offered on a voluntary, uncompensated basis. Participation does not entail a fixed schedule or recurring commitment. The Office engages reviewers on an as-needed basis, matching proposals to relevant subject-matter expertise as submissions are received. Proposals typically comprise 20 to 50 pages and include a description of the proposed AI application together with a plan for responsible deployment. Reviewers are asked to evaluate clinical safety and potential public-health benefit, and to return their assessment within approximately one week of assignment.

Assessments are typically conducted through a meeting with a member of the Office’s research team; written feedback is welcome but not required. The identity of reviewers is held in confidence and is not disclosed to the applicant company or to the public, unless a reviewer expressly requests attribution. Reviewers are asked to treat the contents of each proposal as confidential until the Office finalizes a regulatory relief agreement with the applicant. Where no agreement is reached, the obligation of confidentiality continues indefinitely.

Areas of Particular Need

The Office has identified a particular need for reviewers with expertise in the following areas:

  • Primary care and family medicine
  • Pediatrics
  • Ophthalmology
  • Endocrinology
  • Nutrition
  • Oncology

Expressions of Interest

Healthcare professionals interested in serving as reviewers are invited to contact the Office at [email protected]. Submissions should include a brief summary of the respondent’s clinical background and areas of specialty. Qualified respondents will be added to the Office’s reviewer roster and contacted when a proposal aligns with their expertise.
