Mental Health Supervisor Information

Beginning January 1, 2027, all supervisors must complete supervisor training as required by Utah State Code 58-60-102(4) and R156-60e-306.1. Certifications or official transcripts must be submitted directly to [email protected] and must include your name and license number. Once received, our office will review your credentials and issue an "Approved Supervisor" specialty designation, which will be reflected on your license.

APPROVED TRAINING PATHWAYS

To qualify as a supervisor, this training must be completed after you have been fully licensed as an independent mental health professional for at least two years.

Supervisors must demonstrate completion of training through one of the following pathways: 

  • Graduate-Level Coursework: A completed graduate-level course verified by an official transcript;
    OR
  • Synchronous Professional Course: Completion of a minimum 8-hour synchronous course specifically focused on clinical supervision. This course must be taught by a mental health professional and be presented by:
    • A regionally accredited educational institution.
    • A national or state association-approved provider.
    • An approved professional training organization.
    • A government agency.

    Professional courses must cover these topics:

    • At least one hour on defining and conceptualizing clinical supervision and models. 
    • At least two hours on the supervisory relationship and the supervised individuals' development.
    • At least two hours on supervision methods and techniques, including: roles, process, group supervision, multi-cultural supervision, and evaluation. 
    • At least two hours on standards of practice, codes of ethics, and legal and professional issues. 
    • At least one hour on executive administrative tasks, including supervision plans, contracts, record keeping, and reporting.

    NOTE: The synchronous professional course must be a single, dedicated course of study that is presented live. The course may not be an asynchronous, self-paced course, and you may not combine multiple continuing education courses to meet this requirement.
