Department of Commerce announces new Director of the Division of Corporations and extends gratitude to retiring Director for 28 years of esteemed service with the State

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Francine A. Giani, Executive Director of the Utah Department of Commerce, announced today that effective July 30, 2018 Jason Sterzer has been appointed as the new Director of the Division of Corporations and Commercial Code. Sterzer was selected to succeed outgoing Director Kathy Berg who is retiring after 28 years of prominent public service with the State of Utah.

Berg began her storied career in state government with her first post in customer service at the Division of Corporations where her courteous attitude was recognized in a letter from U.S. Senator Orrin Hatch (R-UT). Kathy Berg’s impeccable professionalism led to multiple promotions within the Department of Commerce and other state agencies which ultimately landed her in the Director’s chair in 2001 where she led the Division until retirement. Berg
was also well known in the community and with city and county governments for her generosity and commitment to supporting Utah business. She was a sought after guest lecturer with Salt Lake Community College and Westminster College and also served on Westminster’s Legal Assistant Program Board. Berg enjoyed supporting young women
interested in business through Sandy City’s Chamber of Commerce scholarship program by conducting tours of the Division and explaining the important regulatory jobs being carried out for the public.

Jason Sterzer previously held Securities Analyst and Securities Examiner positions with the Division of Securities. Before his tenure with the State of Utah, he was a contract attorney with Ray, Quinney & Nebeker. Sterzer graduated from the University of Utah with a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and earned his Juris Doctor from Southern Illinois
University School of Law.

About Kathy Berg
Kathy Berg served as Director of the Division of Corporations and Commercial Code since 2001. Previously Berg was a Budget officer with the Utah State Board of Education, a Budget and Accounting officer with the Utah Department of Commerce, Assistant Director of the Utah Division of Corporations, and Customer Service Agent with the Division of
Corporations and Commercial Code. In 2007, she was elected President to the International Association of Commercial Administrators. She served on Westminster College’s Legal Assistant Program Board. She attended the University of Utah and obtained her Paralegal Certificate from Westminster College. Kathy Berg is married with 4 children and resides in Salt Lake City, UT.

About Jason Sterzer
Jason Sterzer has held Securities Analyst and Securities Examiner positions with the Division of Securities since 2016. Before his tenure with the State of Utah, he was a contract attorney for Ray, Quinney & Nebeker. Sterzer graduated from the University of Utah with a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and earned his Juris Doctor from Southern Illinois University School of Law. While at SIU’s School of Law, he was Editor of the Journal of Legal Medicine where he published several articles for which he was given the “Taylor & Francis Greatest Impact Award”. Sterzer is married with 3 children and resides in Taylorsville, UT.
