Utah Medical Board Creates AI Working Group to Support OAIP
The Utah Medical Board has officially established an AI Working Group to support the Utah Office of Artificial Intelligence Policy (“OAIP”). It supports OAIP’s review of healthcare-focused regulatory relief applications, advises on policy issues, and assists with oversight as needed.

What We Do
The Office of Artificial Intelligence Policy is part of the Utah Department of Commerce. Our job is to keep Utah’s laws and rules current with a technology that is changing quickly.
We study how artificial intelligence is actually being used in Utah, we work directly with the companies and institutions building it, and we recommend changes to state law and rules based on what we learn. We also run a supervised AI Sandbox program that lets a company test a new AI product here under agreed conditions and close oversight.

Observe and learn
We research how AI is being used, what it does well, and where it goes wrong. Then publish what we find so lawmakers and the public can see it.

Protect the public
Every company in our program agrees to limits on how far it can go, safeguards it must keep in place, and disclosures it must make to the people using its product. We audit them while their agreement is active.

Foster innovation
Instead of guessing whether old rules prohibit new technology, a company can work it out with us and the relevant agency in the open and on the record for a set period of time.
What our AI sandbox allows. Utah’s AI Sandbox lets a company enter an agreement with this office and the agency that regulates it. An agreement can adjust how a specific rule applies during a limited test period, but the company stays subject to every other legal requirement, and being accepted is not an endorsement or approval of the product by the State of Utah. See Utah Code § 13-72-301 and § 13-72-401.

Pro-Human AI Initiative
Utah believes AI should bring people and ideas together. We have partnered with community leaders to create the Pro-Human AI Initiative, which asks a simple question of any new tool: does it expand what a person can do, and can that person understand and challenge what it did?
This office puts that question to the companies we work with. We learn from how their products behave with real users, and we turn what we learn into policy that supports safe, useful innovation.
